This adorable, slightly crazed pal by @the9mm is looking for references. All of them, all the time. CONSUME. Just put them in the folder where we live with our piles of art references and tutorials that we MAY SOMEDAY USE PROBABLY. Arrrrrt
listen I say this with patience bc some people may genuinely have not thought about this before but if you firmly say “AI art is terribly unethical and steals from artists” (which is correct) but then turn around and use voice AIs to generate songs/voice lines that sound like your favourite voice actors or singers……………………………………that is also AI art and it is also terribly unethical
Idk how Vocaloid was made, but I hope it wasn’t done without permission from the people who provided the voices
Vocaloid absolutely is not done without permission from the voice providers, in fact in many cases the specific voice providers are seeked out by the companies creating the voicebanks to record for them (sometimes the vocaloid voicebanks are even modeled after the voice providers specifically, such as Sachiko being based on Sachiko Kobayashi, a popular Japanese actress)
I see some people confused on this, so I want to clarify: vocaloid (and other voice synthesizer programs such as UTAU, CeVIO, Synth-V, etc) is absolutely not comparable to AI voices. In the case of voice synthesizers, a person (usually a singer or a voice actor) is brought into a studio to record the samples, which are then worked into a voicebank. The voicebank is then released for the public to buy (unless it’s a free program, in which case it’s just published for free), and when making a song with a voicebank, the producer of the song has to manipulate each individual note/syllable to achieve the sound they’re looking for
So no, don’t worry: Hatsune Miku is not in any way comparable to unconsented AI samples of real people’s voices
The above poster is totally correct. Vocaloid (and, by extension, other vocal synths) are all made with the consent of the people who have their voice recorded. And, (most of) the people are also paid for their work, which is one thing that AI users aren’t doing. People who use vocal synths are within their full right to use the voices because they are made for that purpose.
There ARE new voicebanks called “AI voicebanks”, which use a special type of AI to automatically adjust the notes. That way, the user of the bank won’t have to spend as much time and effort tuning and adjusting their work. (In fact, I am saving up to upgrade my own Vocaloid program to V6 so I can get those AI voicebanks!) But, those programs only use AI within them. The program isn’t using any unconsentual samples, which is the main problem described in OP’s post. They are just what modern vocaloid looks like; it’s always been about what’s new in music technology (let’s not forget how Vocaloid was the first ever comercial vocal synth).
So, don’t worry at all: Vocaloid does not harm any voice actor’s careers. Using it actually helps voice actors to get paid for their work recording samples! (@theoriginalmadlad)
i’d like to add a bit of my knowledge about the subject as well, if that’s okay!
like the two previous comments have said, Vocaloid (and by extension, other singing voice synthesizers like UTAU*, CeVIO, Synthesizer-V, etc.) are created with the consent of the voice provider, usually by having the voice provider record themselves singing/speaking a list of various sounds in order to get the necessary phenomes for the desired language. SynthV, CeVIO AI, and Vocaloid 6 all have AI software, but like prev said, the AI is just for more efficient tuning.
However, a new type of voice synthesis software called Diff-SVC has recently emerged. Diff-SVC is what’s causing most, if not all, of the problems in OP’s post.
the way Diff-SVC works is that you take two audio files, one being your desired song/speech/whatever and the other being your desired vocal. Unlike the other voice synthesizers i mentioned, Diff-SVC converts the sound of the original audio in order to sound like the desired vocal. so, for example, if you took a recording of idk fucking spongebob (or tom kenny, the va) as your ideal vocal and taylor swift’s 2014 hit ‘shake it off’ as the desired song, then the resulting audio would end up sounding like spongebob/tom kenny, but the actual audio is still taylor swift’s voice, just incredibly warped and distorted in order to make it as spongebob/tom kenny-sounding as possible. the program essentially studies the desired vocal file and picks apart the pitches, phenomes, structure, etc. and then makes changes to the desired audio style by changing whatever’s necessary to make it sound like the desired vocal
While some people make their own voicebanks (meaning with their or another consenting person’s voice) and put them through Diff-SVC to speed up the process of making a cover or a song, the problem is that people have decided to use people’s voices without consent. i hardly believe that Diff-SVC was programed in order for people to nonconsensually use the voices of celebrities and voice actors. it was likely created and released experimentally to help advance the tech for singing voice synthesis, but because it was easy and quick to use, it’s become a major problem for the nonconsensual voice providers
this video explains the difference between traditional voice synthesis, AI voice synthesis, and Diff-SVC pretty effectively, plus it’s only like 3 minutes long
*had this little star bc UTAU is a slight exception. UTAU allows you to make you’re own voicebank files – while Vocaloid, CeVIO, and SynthV are all entirely professionally recorded – so you could make a voicebank with your own voice if so desired. most UTAU voicebanks that are out there involve either the creator’s own voice, the voice of the creator’s friend (consensually provided) or the voice of someone the creator hired for the role. however, because of UTAU’s nature of being able to create new voicebanks, there are voicebanks known as 'jinriki voicebanks’ in which someone has taken an audio recording of someone (typically a character or a politician) and edited the files in order to make a voicebank. usually it’s done as a joke, so you see things like donald trump utau covers or sonic the hedgehog utau covers, and they’re also usually very poor quality since UTAU is made for singing synthesis and jinriki’s are usually sampled from speech rather than song. jinriki’s and the like are forbidden in the UTAU ToS, and they’re not super common. UTAU is mainly used with consensually and legally recorded voicebanks
(@theoriginalmadlad) <- just tagging bc info lol. sorry ik prev did it as well but i think it’s important to know about diff-svc in this context
2023 Updates:
yes yes yes yes
the main problem i have with america is that nothings old as hell there. i cant be so far away from a castle it damages my aura
Noooo haha don't spread racist ideals and colonizer propaganda by idolizing white european aesthetics above all else and denying the life and accomplishments of native peoples on their own lands
I work in postcolonial USAmerican history (museums in New England, Revolutionary through Victorian) and I constantly find myself correcting tourists who say we "don't have anything as old as in Europe here"
they don't usually mean anything by it; they're just not thinking and often get a bit embarrassed when I gently say "nothing EUROPEAN that's that old." but I will keep saying it until I run out of breath, if necessary
(also some pueblos are still occupied! Acoma Pueblo has been continuously occupied for 2000 years! which is incredibly cool!)
I think what these people mean when they say that everything feels so new is the genuinely soulless infrastructure. Malls etc. Just concrete boxes in the middle of nowhere. Cities clearly planned on a grid. The oldest building in NYC is from the 18th century iirc, and there's precious few that aren't from at least the 20th in most spots foreign tourists will typically visit. That can feel alienating, esp. when you grew up somewhere where buildings that are hundreds of years old and all have their own quirks are just... there and in daily use. I went to school in a former Duke's residence. If I wanna go see a castle from the 13th century, I have CHOICES. So many cities here have existed at least since Roman times. The usual US tourist spots just feel vastly different.

yo thats steven bradbury, winner of the short track 1000 metres at the 2002 winter olympics! yooo!! he’s the first man from THE ENTIRE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE to win a gold medal in the winter olympics!!!
hold on, lemme tell you about steven bradbury because the man’s olympic career is WILD. not to be an annoying australian but the whole “purely out of the luck of everyone else crashing, i unexpectedly won!” thing is like 50% myth. lemme explain
so the man actually won gold in the world championships as part of the australian relay team in 1991, but when the team went to the winter olympics the next year, they dropped from third to fourth in the semi-finals and failed to make the finals. get this: the reason is, his teammate lost his footing and crashed. (bradbury was a reserve at the time)
so in the 1994 winter olympics, the australian relay team (with bradbury as an active racer) decided to take a safe and conservative approach. they prioritised staying safe on their feet and hoping other teams would crash. sure enough, the canadian team had a crash, and while they got back up again it lost them significant time and allowed australia to eke out a bronze--this bronze was also the first medal australia EVER won at the winter. in fact, australia could have gone for the silver, but richard nizielski (the same teammate who crashed at 1992) decided to cede the silver to the american he was racing against in order to avoid risking another crash. safe, steady, conservative.
bradbury didn’t just compete in the relay team at the ‘94 winter, though. he was also in the 500m and 1000m short track, and he was INCREDIBLE, but also had insanely bad luck. for the 500m, he came second in his heat and then WON his qtrfinal. he ultimately came fourth in the semi, losing his shot at the finals, after he was suffered a crash from being knocked down by another competitor, and ended up limping over the finish line. for the 1000m, he was ILLEGALLY SHOVED OVER by another competitor, dropped his position, and was elimated.
but his worst luck came at the montreal world cup of the same year when, during a collision, another competitors blade sliced through his thigh. he was in the middle of competing, his heart rate was high because of the adrenaline, blood was pumping like crazy through his body--right out his wound as a result. he lost four litres of blood. all four quadriceps had been sliced through by the blade. he almost died. he later recounted that he was fighting to stay conscious because he thought if he lost consciousness he would definitely die (he probably would have). he ended up with ONE HUNDRED AND ELEVEN STITCHES in his leg, which he could not move afterward for three months. he ended up needing 18 months to get his leg back to full strength.
not only did the man almost DIE short tracking, he almost got a death sentence on his career at the time. his leg was almost disabled, and even though it healed, he was out of training for over a year because of the injury.
but he didnt die, and his career didnt end. bradbury kept training, and remained on the australian team. the man almost died and he still went, yeah nah, i’ve got a few good years left in me.
so bradbury comes back in the ‘98 winter olympics, both on the relay team and in the 500m and 1000m. the relay team unfortunately fails to qualify. devo. for the solos, bradbury was actually considered a real contender, he was still top of his game, but in the end he didn’t qualify for the quarterfinals. the reason for this was that his time had dropped due to collissions with other competitors. so he went home with nothing but a relay bronze. but bradbury was determined to see a short track win.
too bad fate fucking hates him apparently.
now, if you think almost dying because a skate blade sliced through your thigh and you almost bled out was bad, bradbury’s career was really threatened in 2000. during an exercise one of the other skaters fell in front of him. bradbury tried to jump, instead not only did he clip the other skater, but it caused him to lose his balance and he stacked it straight into the barrier, fracturing his vertebrae.
not only did the man spend months in a halo brace, not only did the man need to get pins skull and plates and screws bolted to his back and chest, but he was told explicitly by doctors he would never, ever be able to get back onto the ice again. that was it. he survives almost dying in the 94 world cup only to have his world crash and burn in a training exercise six years later.
anyway, fuck that, bradbury got back onto the ice. clearly. because goddamnit, he wanted that winter gold on a solo win.
look, not only did the man have a near death experience and metal bolted to his bones, but he was also aging up past the prime of an olympic athlete. he was, what some may say, not in his prime. it was a longshot. he admitted this. but he also wanted that fucking medal, and i guess everyone really liked him or felt incredibly bad for all the bad luck he’d had, so come the 2002 winter olympics, he’s on the team.
bradbury won his 1000m heat.
too bad in the qtrfinals he was racing against the gold medal pick of the host nation (ohno), and also the defending world champion (gagnon). only top two finishers could proceed to the semis.
bradbury came third. that was it. he was out. his olympic career was ov-
BUT WAIT, WHAT’S THAT! ON THE HORIZON! IS IT... A DISQUALIFICATION??? YES FOLKS, GAGNON WAS DISQUALIFIED FOR OBSTRUCTING ANOTHER RACER!! BRADBURY WAS IN!
he was in, but he still had the semis and the finals to get through. bradbury had, it was fair to say, an indomitable will, but his body was not in the same shape as his competitors. it had been through some shit. he knew he was slower than his rivals. so he took the same strategy as the australian relay team did all the way back in ‘94: conservative, steady, safe.
so here’s the thing. bradbury had a whole career, and body, full of proof that falls happen in short track. may as well call it short stack. it was a question of when, not if. people fall down, people collide, people trip, and medal chances are missed due to lost time. isn’t that what happened to him over and over again? so this is where i say that the whole “oh golly gosh who’da thunk everyone would fall down and i would just win!” thing is 50% a myth.
because that was his whole strategy.
you can’t be 100% certain the favourites are gonna fall, so of course there’s an element of chance, which is why i say only 50%, but bradbury’s plan for the semis and the finals was always to cruise along behind the other competitors, concentrate on skating safe and staying on his feet, avoiding collissions and trips, and just hoping (expecting) the other competitors to eat ice. he just wasn’t faster than his competitors, he was older, he had injuries, and he had to do (if things went well) four races in one night. it was a good strategy.
during the semis, bradbury’s “cruise behind the other races” strategy put him firmly in last place for most of the race. but then the other competitors all crashed, including a defending champion. bradbury cruised right into first place and went on to the finals. which is not the events of the picture above.
yep, that’s right. come the finals, bradbury repeats the exact same strategy. crusing behind the four other competitors, he kept a firm hold of last place and just concentrated on safety and steadiness. and then it happened. it wasn’t just a crash. it was the crash. a four-skater pile up. li (china) took the fall on the last turn of the race, just short of the finish, and triggered a chain crash that took all three other favourites down. bradbury was trailing 15m behind, putting him well clear of the collission.
bradbury hoped to get a bronze. he skated away with the first gold ever taken by an australian, by any man in the southern hemisphere, at the winter olympics.
he had over a decade of crashes and bashes. he almost died, twice. he almost had his career permanently destroyed, twice. he almost grabbed medals countless times, only to lose them to trips and shoves. he was the second oldest competitor, and the oldest of the finals. he was slower than everyone else. he was past his best. but let’s allow bradbury to say it best himself:
"Obviously I wasn't the fastest skater. I don't think I'll take the medal as the minute-and-a-half of the race I actually won. I'll take it as the last decade of the hard slog I put in."
and what a goddamn slog. i want to say, firmly and proudly as an australian, the man didn’t win the gold at the 2002 winter olympics because he got lucky when seven competitors all tripped and fell. he won the gold at the 2002 winter olympics because he survived a ten year olympic career despite all the odds, never gave up despite the long shot, and used what he knew.
if there is a lesson in this as it relates to the original picture, it’s that while other social media platforms like twitter and reddit are jostling and shoving each other in competition to take first, tumblr has been slowly and steadily trailing behind, just focusing on keeping itself afloat, because it knows the simple truth that taking a fall is a matter of when, not if. and now everyone else is caught in a pile up and all it needs to do is keep cruising.
also, raise a glass to steven bradbury. man earned his medal.
re: that fucking staff post. obviously death to algorithms, but i also wanna interrogate the wider underlying assumptions of their logic there cuz. is 'success' having lots of followers & lots of popular posts??? why is that the end goal of using this website. i don't open tumblr to get attention from strangers, i open tumblr to read funny jokes and interesting commentary and to see cool art. encouraging clout-chasing will only increase user engagement if you successfully get people literally addicted to the associated dopamine hit. what if we didn't have to do that!!! what if a website could be a place you went to on purpose because you had fun there!!!!
Hi OP and assorted seekers of happiness on Tumblr,
One day many months ago someone I followed reblogged a post that had reblogs turned off before I could reblog it. I looked at the OP and it turned out to be a user research survey blog claiming to associate with Staff. I took it and complained about various things, and then a couple weeks later one of the things I complained about got changed. That blog, was https://www.tumblr.com/benevolenthellsite and the two most newest surveys linked were:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2V3MQTP (the longer one)
and
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HS5LP3W (the shorter one)
So if you want Staff to stop punching holes in their own roof, take one of those. Or both, both is good. Anyways, just wanted to give you an option. Thanks for listening!
This is the reality for the writers sadly...
Follow the writers guild (east and west) on socials. Pay attention to what's happening and the progress being made (or lack there of).
If you live in an area that you can attend a picket or rally, please do it. Numbers matter. Support and solidarity is everything.
If you don't have that access, talk about it on social media. Use the hashtags.
The strike has been going on for 51 days now.
WTAF? How can anyone possibly live a reasonably happy life on what’s basically pocket change?
It’s due to the wholesale deregulation of the entertainment industry over the past 35 years which has led to the studios and their parent companies engaging in unfair business practices and callous exploitation of loopholes in contracts that shouldn’t even be there in the first place, along with misusing and abusing the tax laws to destroy “unprofitable” content they don’t want anymore, while depriving writers, actors and directors decent residuals and compensation, and the public is deprived of the work that those writers, actors and directors put their hearts and souls into.
Writers, actors and directors seem to be treated more like independent contractors, rather than as employees, which means they can be treated like crap, particularly the writers.
If ever there was a time for re-regulation of media/entertainment, this is the time for it, but Congress (primarily the Republicans, but there are a few Dems who aren’t keen on re-regulation) is so deregulation-happy that any meaningful regulation of media and entertainment that gives all of its employees adequate pay and humane working conditions may never happen.
Honestly? It should be the other way round…the TALENT gets the large checks and the studio gets smaller ones. Why? Because of how many shows/movies a studio makes. The sheer volume makes up for the smaller amount per show. Plus, the people responsible for it being a hit show should be rewarded.
In a world where things actually made some semblance of sense, the talent *should* be the ones getting the larger checks - both in actual pay and residuals - because they’re the ones who are doing the “heavy lifting” of creating/producing a TV show or film, and all of those long hours of hard work on the set (including sitting in a makeup chair for 3+ hours, or having to do rewrites on the fly) should be fairly and justly compensated.
The studio bosses are the middlemen, and it’s largely due to their status as “middlemen” that allows them to take home the larger checks and misuse/abuse the tax laws, while writers and actors gets scraps and crumbs, including “pocket change” residual checks.
Yep. And it’s similar in every corporation these days. And people will revolt
The revolt is already happening; the entertainment industry is the most high-profile corporate sector, and that’s going to be the place where the revolt will be the most visible, since American entertainment has a dominant presence in the worldwide marketplace, and any labor upheavals/unrest/uprisings that happen in the American entertainment industry are going to have a ripple effect worldwide to one degree or another, as multinational media companies are actively seeking out new markets and new content/talents from other countries.
Now, how the ongoing writers strike and a rapidly approaching actors strike will affect the general public is difficult to measure, since there seems to be little, if any, mass protests from the general public that will force the studios/streamers/parent companies to go back to the negotiating table and bargain in good faith with the writers.
Of course, those who are in various fandoms are supporting the writers, and that’s great, but fandoms only make up a tiny fraction of the overall entertainment consuming public, and the fact that there appears to be very little public awareness/interest that there may not be a fall TV season or they’re indifferent to the possible absence of a fall TV season is interesting, to say the least.
The fact that the writers strike has been essentially “blacked out” by the major networks during their nightly newscasts may have contributed to this apparent public indifference to the writers strike, and it also seems to be extending to a possible actors strike, as well. The next couple of months could set the stage for whatever happens in September and the rest of the year.
The writers have already proven to the studios that they can go for a very long time without work, and the public seems to be proving to the studios that they can go for a long time without any new content, due to the absence of any protests against the studios .

The value is 2.53 USD.
The second image is a screenshot of the caption from Instagram, reading:
“Week 8 of the @/writersguildwest @/wgaeast strike.
I received this residual check last week for an episode of @/911onfox that I wrote in season 5. @/911onfox is Fox’s #1 scripted drama. This is why we’re striking.
What the studios don’t realize is that many of us have long, long breaks in work through no fault of our - own during which we are meant to have residuals to fall back on and fill in the gaps. But residuals and compensation have been quashed by their unfair business practices and callous exploitation of loopholes they have created in our contract.
What the studios don’t realize is we are uniquely equipped to ride this #strike out for as long as it takes. We are used to months upon months without a meaningful paycheck. We are accustomed to being used and abused by the studios.
The ball is in their court. Each day that the strike continues, it is because the #amptp is choosing it. Because the @/writersguildwest is going to keep fighting all the way to the bank.”
